The Burlington\u2013Honfleur Sister Cities Committee invites the public to a special screening of\u00a0The Mystery of Satie<\/em>\u00a0(Le myst\u00e8re Satie<\/em>), a poetic documentary, followed by an in-person discussion with\u00a0the filmmaker\u00a0Bastien Loukia<\/strong>, on\u00a0Thursday, October 8<\/strong>, 2026, at\u00a0BCA Community Room, 405 Pine Street, Burlington VT<\/strong>. Admission is free.<\/p>

The film re-examines the life, contradictions, and enduring legacy of\u00a0Erik Satie<\/strong>, the influential and unconventional French composer born in Honfleur, France\u2014Burlington\u2019s sister city. It follows Satie\u2019s journey from his Normandy birthplace to fin-de-si\u00e8cle Paris and Montmartre, where his spare, haunting music, eccentric personality, and irreverent approach to artistic convention helped shape the emergence of musical modernism.<\/p>

Drawing upon rare archival materials, evocative imagery, and accounts from Satie\u2019s time, the documentary explores Satie\u2019s relationships with such celebrated figures as\u00a0Claude Debussy, Jean Cocteau, and Pablo Picasso<\/strong>, while illuminating his lasting influence on avant-garde music and art.<\/p>

Released in July 2025 to commemorate the centenary of Satie\u2019s death in 1925,\u00a0The Mystery of Satie<\/em>\u00a0 serves as a companion to Loukia\u2019s earlier graphic novel about the composer,\u00a0Erik Satie, cinq nouvelles en forme de poire<\/em>.<\/p>

The evening will offer Burlington audiences a special connection to Honfleur through both its celebrated composer and a contemporary filmmaker and artist from the city.\u00a0The filmmaker Bastien Loukia will be present for the screening an<\/strong>d will participate afterward in a conversation about the film, Satie, and their shared hometown. Several other visitors from Honfleur will be present as well. The discussion will be moderated by\u00a0Fran Stoddard<\/strong>.<\/p>

Doors open at\u00a06:00 p.m.<\/strong>, with light appetizers served before the screening.<\/p>

The event is presented by the\u00a0Burlington\u2013Honfleur Sister Cities Committee<\/strong>, which promotes cultural exchange and friendship between Burlington and Honfleur, the historic Normandy port city where Erik Satie was born in 1866.<\/p>
